LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Justin Bieber has been sued by a paparazzo who claims the singer kicked and punched him last year at a Southern California shopping center.

A lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges the "Baby" crooner attacked Jose Osmin Hernandez Duran after Bieber and his then-girlfriend went to the movies at The Commons in Calabasas.

Bieber's representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

Duran claims Bieber started to leave the shopping center in his Mercedes, but got out of his car and sprinted toward him.

Duran says Bieber jumped into the air from 6 to 8 feet away to deliver a martial-arts-type kick to the photographer's gut before punching him in the face.

The suit seeks unspecified damages for "severe and extreme emotional distress" and negligence.

Brazil protests back despite proposed reforms

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Protesters returned to the streets in smaller, sporadic protests in a handful of Brazilian cities Tuesday, demanding better education, transport and health services.

The protests came one day after President Dilma Rousseff proposed a wide range of actions to reform Brazil's political system.

Protesters left a slum in Rio and peacefully marched toward a rich beach neighborhood. In Sao Paulo, some groups blocked major highways while others marched earlier in the day in impoverished neighborhoods. About 1,000 people in Niteroi marched and other demonstrations took place in five other states.

Police in Rio de Janeiro charged into the Nova Holanda slum and killed at least eight people as they hunted for the killer of a police officer who died after a protest the night before that devolved into a clash with demonstrators who looted stores and robbed bystanders.

"We think the people who are most interested in the demands being made in the street demonstrations of the past several days are those who live in these kind of poor areas," said Guilherme Boulos, one of the leaders of Tuesday's protests on Sao Paulo's outskirts.

So far, Brazilian protesters don't appear appeased by Rousseff's proposals, which shifted some of the burden for progress onto Brazil's widely loathed Congress by calling for a plebiscite on political reform lawmakers will have to approve. The divided Congress would likely struggle to take any quick action on such a plebiscite.

Protesters have filled cities to air a wide spectrum of grievances including poor public services and the high cost of hosting next year's World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Olympics.

About 100,000 people were expected to march in the city of Belo Horizonte on Wednesday before Brazil plays Uruguay in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup. City officials declared a holiday and said they were expecting confrontations with demonstrators.

Sepp Blatter, president of international soccer organizing body FIFA, was scheduled to attend the game. FIFA officials have said security has been boosted because of the protests, but it wasn't immediately known if any changes were expected in Belo Horizonte because of Blatter's presence.

In Porto Alegre, Ronaldo Sielichow, president of that city's Association of Store Owners, asked law enforcement to beef up security after looting hit the southern city over the past few days during demonstrations.

Rousseff told governors and mayors Monday that her administration would allocate $23 billion for new spending on urban public transport, but she didn't provide details on what the new projects would be. Four leaders from the free-transit activist group that launched the demonstrations more than a week ago said she also gave them no concrete plans while meeting with them.

She said her government would focus on five priorities: fiscal responsibility and controlling inflation; political reform; health care; public transport, and education.

In her weekly column posted Tuesday on the presidency's website, Rousseff said: "The money spent to build or renovate stadiums for the World Cup is not part of the federal budget and does not affect funds earmarked for health and education."

Rousseff added that the World Cup cost "was financed and will be paid back by the companies and state governments that use these stadiums."

Many of the actions proposed by Rousseff, including using all oil royalties to fund education and attracting foreign doctors to work in underserved areas, weren't new and had already met with stiff resistance in Congress.

LG Optimus G2 appears in leaked slides

LG Optimus G2

A Wild LG Optimus G2 appears; uses dual-buttons. It's super-effective!

If you weren't pretty sure we are about to see the LG Optimus G2 in New York on August 7, you haven't been paying close attention. That's OK, rumors fly around and they can be hard to keep track of, but usually pictures make it easier. Thanks to habitual leaker @evleaks, we now have a few.

Nothing that confirms or denies the expected specs of a Snapdragon S800 processor and 1080p HD display, but LG and Qualcomm pretty much let that out of the bag a week or so ago.

What is interesting is that the mystery buttons on the back of the device are shown in these pictures, along with a slide that leads us to believe they will be tied to the volume setting. We'll likely know all there is to know in a little over a week, but for now we can look at the images and speculate. Hit the break to see the rest.

World's bankers meet, pressing for clarity on regulatory change

By Steve Slater and Laura Noonan

PARIS (Reuters) - Top bankers and policymakers from around the world will search for ways to kick-start Europe's economy and seek clarity on regulatory changes at this week's conference of the financial industry's global trade body.

More than 1,000 bankers, politicians, regulators and investors meet in Paris on Tuesday and Wednesday for a conference of the Institute of International Finance (IIF), which lobbies on behalf of banks over regulatory, financial and economic issues.

The meeting comes against a jittery backdrop after investors were rattled in the past week by concerns about how the global economy will cope with an end to massive central bank impetus measures and a slowdown in China's growth. That has halted a strong run by bank shares, and reignited discussion about how to boost growth.

Douglas Flint, chairman of both HSBC - Europe's biggest bank - and the IIF, said banks wanted to get clarity on "defining the end point" for regulatory change so they can adapt to that framework.

"Regulation is always going to be a continuum, but the scale of the change that's taking place at the moment is unprecedented and it would be extremely helpful to everyone if there was settled framework," he told Reuters on Monday in Paris.

Banks are on a firmer footing than two years ago after regulators forced them to increase their capital and liquidity strength, but there remains uncertainty about whether banks can be deemed too big, the details of a euro zone banking union and the structure to deal with banks that fail.

Euro zone ministers failed over the weekend to agree how to handle bank collapses or set a blueprint for how bondholders would share losses for bailing out banks, showing the reform program is still far from complete.

Flint said a lack of regulatory clarity for banks was holding back economic growth.

"If you want to get the economies growing again - and credit supply is part of that - then it's important the system is stable. At the moment there are still some fairly fundamental debates still going on," he said.

He said China's slowing growth needed to be closely watched, but European issues still dominated the global stage: "The eurozone is still the most immediate issue."

The IIF represents more than 450 banks and other financial firms and prides itself on getting bankers together with politicians, regulators and central bankers.

It represented creditors of Greece's debt in the biggest and most complex sovereign restructuring ever and has spent much of its recent past leading calls for better coordination of regulatory change.

Bank bosses including Flint, UBS's Axel Weber, BNP Paribas's Baudouin Prot and Societe Generale's Frederic Oudea will be joined by the European Central Bank's Jorg Asmussen, French central bank governor Christian Noyer and officials from the New York Fed, IMF and big investors such as Pimco.

Finance ministers from France and Chile are also due to attend, as well as EU competition chief Joaquin Almunia and the European Banking Authority watchdog.

There remains skepticism regarding the quality of assets in Europe's banks, where critics say banks and regulators have been too slow to recognize losses on many loans and lax in how they assess their riskiness.

The EBA wants to draw a line under those concerns with a review of the assets of euro zone banks later this year, which will lay the groundwork for another "stress test" of Europe's banks next year.

An IIF panel on Tuesday will assess how Europe's much-criticized past tests have compared to those in the United States.

New study on popular prostate cancer protein provides insight into disease progression

June 25, 2013 ? Researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute have uncovered for the first time the vital role a popular protein plays in the stroma, the cell-lined area outside of a prostate tumor.

Researchers have long understood the function of the protein, Caveolin-1 (Cav-1), in prostate cancer, including its role in treatment resistance and disease aggressiveness. However, prior to this study, little was known about the role of Cav-1 within the stroma.

The study, published in the Journal of Pathology, found that a decreased level of the Cav-1 protein in the stroma indicated tumor progression -- a function opposite to the known role of Cav-1 within a tumor. Inside the tumor, an increased level of this protein signifies tumor progression. These human tumor findings suggest that patients whose prostate tumor is surrounded by a stroma with decreased levels of the Cav-1 protein may have an overall worse prognosis and a higher chance of disease relapse.

"How a prostate tumor communicates with its microenvironment, or stroma, is a vital process we need to understand to assess the aggressiveness of a patient's disease and potential response to treatment," said Dolores Di Vizio, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Urologic Oncology Research Program and senior investigator of the study. "This research suggests that the cells surrounding a prostate tumor are equally as important as the tumor itself in helping understand the complexity of a man's disease. This early-stage research may provide a new, future marker that may ultimately aid diagnosis and treatment, and personalize prostate cancer therapy."

In addition to understanding the role of Cav-1 in the tumor microenvironment, researchers discovered that the loss of Cav-1 causes an increase of cholesterol in the stroma. Previous research findings suggest that cholesterol levels are related to aggressive prostate cancer, but cholesterol's role had never been evaluated within the stroma.

"Cholesterol has been shown to be a driver of prostate cancer progression," said Di Vizio. "For the first time in prostate cancer research, we found that when levels of Cav-1 decrease in the stroma, both cholesterol and androgens increase. This finding may partly explain a resistance to traditional treatments."

Though the findings are preliminary, the Cedars-Sinai researchers Di Vizio, Michael Freeman, PhD, vice chair of research in the Department of Surgery and professor/director of the Cancer Biology Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, and post-doctoral fellows Matteo Morello, PhD, and Sungyong You, PhD, will continue evaluating the role of the Caveolin-1 protein in the stroma and its potential end benefit in patients.

Sony announces the stylus-friendly, 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra with Snapdragon 800

Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Sony today at Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai entered the world of the gianormous smartphone with the oversized, ultra-powered (and aptly named) Xperia Z Ultra.

The Xperia Z Ultra is a 6.4-inch monster with a 1080p display that works with a stylus (or any pencil, Sony says), runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and is powered by Qualcomm's latest, the Snapdragon 800 processor. Sony is heralding the phone as the "world's slimmest and largest full HD smartphone." At 6.5 mm, it's not quite as thin as the 6.18 mm Huawei Ascend P6 we got a look at last week, that's where the "largest full HD smartphone" comes in. (The full press release, which you can read after the break, is loaded with such caveats.)

Other specs of note include an 8-megapixel camera, a 3,000 mAh battery and 16 gigabytes of internal storage, with about 11 GB available to the user, and a microSD card slot for extra space. (Props to Sony for being up-front about the usable storage space.) It's loaded with Sony customizations and entertainment options.

The Xperia Z Ultra will be available in the third quarter (which starts next week, by the way), in black, white or purple.

Woman off a cliff video: Infidelity has a price

Woman off a cliff: A married woman throws her husband's "other woman" off a small cliff, a ravine really, in a jealous rage. And the whole incident is captured on video.

By David Clark Scott,?Staff writer / June 22, 2013

In 1697, William Congreve wrote a poem that included the phrase: "Heav'n has no rage, like love to hatred turn'd, nor Hell a fury like a woman scorn'd"

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Over the centuries, that line has been paraphrased and popularized into the saying: "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned."

Now there's a video on the Internet that vividly illustrates the proverbial wisdom.

Captured on a closed circuit security camera is a rendezvous in Arequipa, Peru, between Renzo Zanabria, a married man and Sandra Bruna Morales, his lover. But the tryst is suddenly cut short by the arrival of Zanabria's wife, Lissette Lupo Mamani.

Zanabria's wife grabs Ms. Morales by the hair drags her to the edge of a ravine and pushes her off.

Let's be clear, while most of the English language media reporting on this as a "woman tossed off a cliff " - which sounds more dramatic ? the Spanish news reports used the word "barranco," which means ravine. That seems like a more accurate description of the scene. Of course, the reports say the ravine was about 20 feet deep, so this wasn't like getting tossed into a ditch, either.?

Ms. Morales survives the tumble into the ravine - apparently without serious injury - gets up and leaves, all the while Zanbria's wife is gesturing and shouting at her in anger. Zanabria, wisely, slinks away and out of view of the camera.

Ms. Morales probably didn't expect that getting caught sleeping with a married man would get her tossed into a ravine. And she certainly didn't expect that anyone with access to the Internet would have a front row seat to the incident.

But based on the comments being left on various sites, the sentiment among most women is that if you play with fire, you can expect to get burned. There hasn't been much consternation over vigilante justice or much compassion shown for the woman tossed in the ravine. Some have suggested the wife should have tossed her husband into the ravine too.

Given that all the world saw the incident, and the obvious enthusiasm in the Spanish language media for the story, Zanabria apparently didn't think he had much to lose by taking his plea for forgiveness public as well.

Americas Noticias shows Zanabria holding a microphone and talking into a news camera with this statement, which reads in part:

"I beg you, on my knees?? ... i don't care what others think, my only concern is you and my children, who I need because without you I am nothing. I ask you, please, to forgive me. I have made mistakes, but I miss you."

So far, no reports on how his scorned wife received the request for forgiveness. But one suspects that the "other woman" may have learned a lesson.

Reports: Snowden arrives in Moscow

By James Pomfret and Lidia Kelly

HONG KONG/MOSCOW (Reuters) - An aircraft believed to be carrying Edward Snowden landed in Moscow on Sunday after Hong Kong let fugitive former U.S. security contractor leave the territory, frustrating Washington's efforts to extradite him on espionage charges.

The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said Snowden was heading for a "democratic nation" which it did not name, although a source at the Russian airline Aeroflot said he would fly on within 24 hours to Cuba and then planned to go to Venezuela.

Snowden's departure from Hong Kong, a former British colony which returned to China in 1997, is likely to be highly embarrassing for the administration of President Barack Obama. U.S. authorities had said only on Saturday they were optimistic Hong Kong would cooperate over Snowden, who revealed extensive U.S. government surveillance in the United States and abroad.

Moscow airport officials said the flight from Hong Kong had landed but could not immediately confirm Snowden was on board. However, a source at Aeroflot said he had booked a seat on the service.

Snowden, who worked for the National Security Agency, had been hiding in Hong Kong since leaking details about the U.S. surveillance activities to news media.

In their statement announcing Snowden's departure, the Hong Kong authorities said they were seeking clarification from Washington about reports of U.S. spying on government computers in the territory.

The Obama administration has previously painted the United States as a victim of Chinese government computer hacking.

Earlier this month Obama called on his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to acknowledge the threat posed by "cyber-enabled espionage" against the United States and to investigate the problem when they met in California. Obama also met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Northern Ireland last week.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said it had allowed the departure of Snowden - regarded by his supporters as a whistleblower and by his critics as a criminal and perhaps even a traitor - because the U.S. request to have him arrested did not comply with the law.

In Washington, a Justice Department official said it would seek cooperation with countries Snowden may try to go to.

"It's a shocker," said Simon Young, a law professor with Hong Kong University. "I thought he was going to stay and fight it out. The U.S. government will be irate."

OBAMA AGENDA SIDELINED

Obama has found his domestic and international policy agenda sidelined as he has scrambled to deflect accusations that the surveillance violates privacy protections and civil rights. The president has maintained it has been necessary to thwart attacks on the United States, and the U.S. government filed espionage charges against Snowden on Friday.

A source at Aeroflot said Snowden would fly from Moscow to Cuba on Monday and then planned to go on to Venezuela. Reporters at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport said there was no immediate sign of Snowden, but Russian media suggested he may have been whisked away by car to a foreign embassy in the capital.

Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper said earlier his final destination might be Ecuador or Iceland.

The WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website said it helped Snowden find "political asylum in a democratic country".

The group said he was accompanied by diplomats and was travelling via a safe route for the purposes of seeking asylum. Sarah Harrison, a legal researcher working for the WikiLeaks, was "accompanying Mr. Snowden in his passage to safety".

"The WikiLeaks legal team and I are interested in preserving Mr Snowden's rights and protecting him as a person," former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, legal director of WikiLeaks and lawyer for the group's founder Julian Assange, said in a statement.

"What is being done to Mr Snowden and to Mr Julian Assange - for making or facilitating disclosures in the public interest - is an assault against the people."

Assange has taken sanctuary in the Ecuadorean embassy in London and said last week he would not leave even if Sweden stopped pursuing sexual assault claims against him because he feared arrest on the orders of the United States.

U.S. authorities have charged Snowden with theft of U.S. government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, with the latter two charges falling under the U.S. Espionage Act.

The United States had asked Hong Kong, a special administrative region (SAR) of China, to send Snowden home.

"The U.S. government earlier on made a request to the HKSAR government for the issue of a provisional warrant of arrest against Mr Snowden," the Hong Kong government said in a statement.

"Since the documents provided by the U.S. government did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law, the HKSAR government has requested the U.S. government to provide additional information ... As the HKSAR government has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr Snowden from leaving Hong Kong."

It did not say what further information it needed.

The White House had no comment.

CHINA SAYS U.S. "BIGGEST VILLAIN"

Although Hong Kong has an independent legal system and its own extradition laws, China controls its foreign affairs. Some observers see Beijing's hand in Snowden's sudden departure.

Iceland refused on Friday to say whether it would grant asylum to Snowden, a former employee of contractor Booz Allen Hamilton who worked at an NSA facility in Hawaii.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said earlier this month that Russia would consider granting Snowden asylum if he were to ask for it and pro-Kremlin lawmakers supported the idea, but there has been no indication he has done so.

The South China Morning Post earlier quoted Snowden offering new details about the United States' spy activities, including accusations of U.S. hacking of Chinese mobile telephone companies and targeting China's Tsinghua University.

Documents previously leaked by Snowden revealed that the NSA has access to vast amounts of internet data such as emails, chat rooms and video from large companies, including Facebook and Google, under a government program known as Prism.

China's Xinhua news agency, referring to Snowden's accusations about the hacking of Chinese targets, said they were "clearly troubling signs".

It added: "They demonstrate that the United States, which has long been trying to play innocent as a victim of cyber attacks, has turned out to be the biggest villain in our age."

Venezuela, Cuba and Ecuador are all members of the ALBA bloc, an alliance of leftist governments in Latin America who pride themselves on their "anti-imperialist" credentials.

(AP) ? James "Whitey" Bulger wants to tell his side of the story ? outside the courtroom.

Defense attorneys in Bulger's high-profile racketeering trial filed a motion Saturday saying a gag order is infringing on their client's Constitutional rights of free speech effective assistance of counsel.

The defense asks federal Judge Denise J. Casper to lift the gag order, citing "personal attacks" against their client in the media and "an enormous degree of media attention and public discourse."

"The defendant has no voice in this discourse. He is a prisoner of the federal government," Bulger's attorneys wrote.

"The defendant is a mere bystander in the heated public conversation surrounding his life and trial."

The 83-year-old Bulger is accused of playing a role in 19 murders during the 1970s and '80s while allegedly running the Winter Hill Gang. He has pleaded not guilty.

In a response filed Sunday, prosecutors called Bulger's request strange and note he is free to tell his story by testifying.

Bulger can "exercise his actual voice from the witness stand if he so chooses ? subject of course to cross-examination," prosecutors wrote.

The response notes that Bulger spent considerable time before the trial trying to bar some reporters from the courtroom but now complains he has no voice in the media.

Bulger's attorneys said the gag order should be lifted so their client can more easily respond to negative coverage.

"Prominent local newspapers have launched personal attacks against him on a regular basis," they wrote.

Meanwhile, press conferences involving prosecution witnesses have become a common occurrence, according to Bulger's attorneys, including one featuring a retired Massachusetts State Police colonel, Thomas Foley.

"Colonel Foley was one of the lead investigators pursuing Mr. Bulger and is for all practical purposes a member of the prosecution team," they wrote.

The government's response said lifting the gag order would foster a "carnival atmosphere" during trial. It also noted that the website for Bulger's lead attorney, J.W. Carney Jr., calls him an expert in using enhanced media attention for his client's benefit.

"The jurors in this case have been repeatedly warned by the Court to avoid media accounts of the pending trial," prosecutors wrote. "Yet Bulger's motion essentially seeks to influence the jury by creating positive press coverage ? something the jurors are duty bound to ignore!"

It was not clear when Casper would rule on the request.

Unexpected discovery of the ways cells move could boost understanding of complex diseases

June 23, 2013 ? A new discovery about how cells move inside the body may provide scientists with crucial information about disease mechanisms such as the spread of cancer or the constriction of airways caused by asthma. Led by researchers at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), investigators found that epithelial cells -- the type that form a barrier between the inside and the outside of the body, such as skin cells -- move in a group, propelled by forces both from within and from nearby cells -- to fill any unfilled spaces they encounter.

The study appears June 23, 2013 in an advance online edition of Nature Materials.

"We were trying to understand the basic relationship between collective cellular motions and collective cellular forces, as might occur during cancer cell invasion, for example. But in doing so we stumbled onto a phenomenon that was totally unexpected," said senior author Jeffrey Fredberg, professor of bioengineering and physiology in the HSPH Department of Environmental Health and co-senior investigator of HSPH's Molecular and Integrative Cellular Dynamics lab.

Biologists, engineers, and physicists from HSPH and IBEC worked together to shed light on collective cellular motion because it plays a key role in functions such as wound healing, organ development, and tumor growth. Using a technique called monolayer stress microscopy -- which they invented themselves -- they measured the forces affecting a single layer of moving epithelial cells. They examined the cells' velocity and direction as well as traction -- how some cells either pull or push themselves and thus force collective movement.

As they expected, the researchers found that when an obstacle was placed in the path of an advancing cell layer -- in this case, a gel that provided no traction -- the cells moved around it, tightly hugging the sides of the gel as they passed. However, the researchers also found something surprising -- that the cells, in addition to moving forward, continued to pull themselves collectively back toward the gel, as if yearning to fill the unfilled space. The researchers dubbed this movement "kenotaxis," from the Greek words "keno" (vacuum) and "taxis" (arrangement), because it seemed the cells were attempting to fill a vacuum.

This new finding could help researchers better understand cell behavior -- and evaluate potential drugs to influence that behavior -- in a variety of complex diseases, such as cancer, asthma, cardiovascular disease, developmental abnormalities, and glaucoma. The finding could also help with tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, both of which rely on cell migration.

In carcinomas, for instance -- which represent 90% of all cancers and involve epithelial cells -- the new information on cell movement could improve understanding of how cancer cells migrate through the body. Asthma research could also get a boost, because scientists think migration of damaged epithelial cells in the lungs are involved in the airway narrowing caused by the disease.

"Kenotaxis is a property of the cellular collective, not the individual cell," said Jae Hun Kim, the study's first author. "It was amazing to us that the cellular collective can organize to pull itself systematically in one direction while moving systematically in an altogether different direction."
