Blockbuster On Demand gives streaming a second chance, with odd limitations

Blockbuster On Demand gives streaming a second chance with odd limitations

Blockbuster hasn't had much success shifting from physical rentals to digital, even under Dish's wing. Nonetheless, it's betting that the umpteenth time's the charm with a relaunch of its Blockbuster On Demand streaming movie service. The revamp ticks many of the checkboxes for a modern by-the-title rental store with 1080p and 5.1-channel surround sound as well as apps for 2012 Samsung Smart TVs, Android and Roku 2 boxes. However, there's a number of curious choices, and we don't just mean the omission of a subscription model. It's missing an iOS app, emphasizes apps for desktop viewing and leaves no way to watch HD video on anything but a TV -- our mobile and PC screens have advanced in the past several years, Blockbuster. Idiosyncrasies notwithstanding, the rebirth presents more of a unified front than the one-time giant has offered in the past.

20 believed dead in Kazakhstan plane crash

(AP) ? A passenger plane crashed Tuesday near Kazakhstan's principal city, Almaty, likely killing all 20 on board, Kazakhstan airline SCAT said.

Almaty and surrounding areas have been shrouded in fog for the last two days and the accident appears to have been caused by limited visibility.

A SCAT statement said 15 passengers and five crew members were aboard the plane.

Visibility was limited, forcing the plane to make a second approach to Almaty airport, the airline said.

The Emergency Services Ministry said rescue workers have been dispatched.

Details on the crash were sparse, including the kind of plane. SCAT's website shows it flies Boeing 757s and 737s along with the Yak-42 and the An-24.

Interfax news agency cited the Almaty province deputy governor Amandyk Batalov as identifying the aircraft as a Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ200.

The Emergency Services Ministry said the plane, which it said was flying in from the northern city of Kokshetau, disappeared from radar around 13:13 p.m. local time (0713 GMT).

This is the second major aircraft accident recently in Kazakhstan. In December, 27 people died when an An-72 military plane crashed near the southern city of Shymkent during violent snowstorms.

George Clooney pays for fellow diner's bill in Germany

George Clooney pays for a fellow restaurant patron's bill in Berlin. Apparently, Clooney pays because he's concerned that his dinner party is too loud, according to a waiter. George Clooney is in Germany preparing to film his movie 'The Monuments Men.'

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / January 29, 2013

George Clooney surprised a fellow diner by paying for the German man?s dinner while in Berlin, where he stopped on his way to film his new movie.

The diner, Oliver Hermann, said in an interview with the newspaper Bild that when he tried to pay his check, the waiter told him Clooney had already taken care of his 100 Euros ($135) bill.

According to the waiter, said Hermann, Clooney had been afraid that he and his party had been too loud and paid for his fellow restaurant patron?s bill as a way to apologize.

But Hermann said that wasn?t the case at all.

?That's not true at all,? he said about Clooney and his party?s supposed loudness. ?They had behaved in a very cultivated manner. I was stunned.??

He said he left his business card at the restaurant in the hope that he could pick up the tab for the actor sometime in the future. But he hadn't recognized Clooney, said Hermann.

Clooney paid for the extra bill at the restaurant the Grill Royal. The actor is in Germany to film the movie ?The Monuments Men,? which will be filmed in Potsdam, according to The Local, a German online news outlet. ?Monuments? follows a group of people in the art world trying to save well-known works of art that were looted by the Nazis. Other actors that have been rumored to be involved with the project include Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, and Daniel Craig.?

Clooney is also involved in a movie titled ?1952,? a film that will be directed by Brad Bird and written by ?Lost? creator Damon Lindelof and writer Jeff Jensen. It?s a Disney project, which may explain the recent reveal of its other title: ?Tomorrowland,? which is also the name of the futuristic section of the Magic Kingdom at the Disney parks. ?1952? is slated for a 2014 release.

Drone?spots you at 20,000 feet with camera-phone sensors

15 hrs.

Paranoid delusions about black helicopters hovering over an area will soon be out of date: The latest scary spy apparatus lives 20,000 feet up, turning 30 or more square miles into live video sharp?enough to spot individual people walking around.

The system is called ARGUS, after the 100-eyed god of Greek myth, and fittingly, it works by hooking together hundreds of inexpensive image sensors like those found in mobile phones.?The non-classified parts were featured last week in an episode of the PBS show "Nova"?all about drones and surveillance (the ARGUS segment starts at the half-hour mark).

ARGUS has appeared in earlier reports, but in a much less detailed fashion. The "Nova"?program shows how it might actually appear in action.

Yiannis Antoniades of BAE Systems, the British company that makes the ARGUS system (with help and funding from DARPA), told PBS that although BAE?would have liked to design a whole new sensor, it was cheaper and more practical to use an array of smaller, off-the-shelf ones.

The current version uses 368 five-megapixel sensors, for a total of 1.8 gigapixels. But unlike other gigapixel camera systems, this one doesn't record still images ? it produces video. That means that from four miles up, it can watch a?roughly circular area up to six miles wide, tracking every car and person in real time.

The amount of data produced by the system is, naturally, immense, around 6?petabytes per day according to earlier reports.

ARGUS has yet to be deployed, although there were plans to send three to Afghanistan onboard a helicopter-like hovering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)?called the Hummingbird, now defunct. The future of the system?is, for now, classified.

UK inflation expectations rise to 2.8 percent in January - Citi/YouGov

LONDON (Reuters) - Britons' expectations of the average rate of inflation for the year ahead edged up to 2.8 percent in January from 2.7 percent in December, a monthly survey by polling company YouGov showed on Monday.

The poll - which is conducted on behalf of Citi - showed that over the next five to 10 years, Britons expected inflation to average 3.4 percent, up from 3.3 percent in December.

Both figures are in line with the long-run average since the survey started in 2005 but above the BoE Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) 2 percent target, Citi said.

"Whether by luck or judgement, the general public's inflation expectations have, on average, been closer than the MPC's forecasts to the inflation outturns, correctly anticipating the persistent inflation stickiness," Citi economist Michael Saunders said.

"At present, we suspect that the general public's view of further inflation stickiness will again prove correct," he added. "Moreover, the Chancellor may well change the inflation target to make it easier for the MPC to tolerate such a persistent regulatory-driven inflation overshoot."

The poll of 2,413 people was conducted between January 21 and January 23. Consumer price inflation was 2.7 percent in December.

Businesses plan to boost spending, gauge shows

4 hrs.

A gauge of business investment improved in December, a sign that worries over tighter fiscal policy may not have held back capital spending plans as much as feared at the end of 2012.?

The Commerce Department said on Monday that non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, edged up 0.2 percent last month.?

Many economists had expected businesses to be more timid with spending late last year because of uncertainty over government spending cuts and tax increases, which had been scheduled to kick in this month. Congress struck a last-minute deal in early January to avoid or postpone most of the austerity measures.?

Monday's data showed companies were still planning to expand their businesses.?

"There's a lot more confidence," said Wayne Kaufman, an analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.?

The data pushed down prices for U.S. government debt, while giving the dollar a lift against the yen. But stock prices opened little changed.?

The report showed new orders for overall durable goods - long lasting factory goods from toasters to automobiles - jumped 4.6 percent in December, beating economists expectations of a 1.8 percent gain.?

Gains were broad based, with new orders for machinery, cars and primary metals all increasing. Orders of civilian aircraft, a volatile category, jumped 10.1 percent.?

Economists still think economic growth cooled in the fourth quarter as companies slowed the pace at which they re-stocked their shelves.?

But Monday's report suggested businesses expect demand in the U.S. economy to improve.?

In a further sign firms were betting their business will grow, the investment plans proxy for November was revised higher to show a 3 percent gain.?

"It certainly seems to us that companies are slowly but surely expanding," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.?

AP NewsBreak: Harkin won't seek 6th Senate term

CUMMING, Iowa (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin will not seek re-election in 2014, the Iowa Democrat said Saturday.

The 73-year-old Harkin told The Associated Press in an interview, "It's just time to step aside," noting that by the time he would finish a sixth term, he would be 81.

Harkin said the move also would allow a new generation of Democrats to seek higher office.

The announcement comes as a surprise, considering he had $2.7 million in his campaign war chest and was planning a gala fundraiser in Washington, D.C., next month.

Harkin is a leading liberal in the Senate, chairing the health, education, labor and pensions committee and having served as a key salesman of President Barack Obama's 2010 health care bill to the wary left.

No Iowa Republicans have taken formal steps toward seeking the seat.

Harkin's decision eases the burden on the GOP, who have to gain six seats to win the majority in the Senate. The president's party historically loses seats in the midterm elections after his re-election. Obama, a Democrat, was re-elected last year.

Egypt army to deploy after soccer verdict riot

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian security officials say the military is being deployed to the Mediterranean city of Port Said after eight people were killed in riots outside the main prison following a controversial verdict related to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence.

A Cairo judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection with the Feb. 1, 2012, soccer melee in Port Said that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team.

Two police were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants on trial.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the crowd, killing six in Saturday's violence outside the prison.

Security officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

NYC Department of Finance Publishes 2014 Tentative Assessment ...

January 25th, 2013

For real estate property tax purposes, New York City reviews all properties on an annual basis.? In doing so, last week the City released its 2013-2014 property valuations for both commercial and residential properties. ?The bottom line ? Citywide market values have increased by 4.26% and have reached a total market value of $874 Billion ? that?s an overall increase of $35.7 Billion.? Department of Finance Commissioner David M. Frankel cites market forces for contributing to 3.2% of the overall value increases with the remaining increases attributed to new construction and physical improvements.

For Class 2 properties, which consist of coops, condos and rental apartment buildings, the total market value rose 4.8% citywide to $204.6 Billion.? State law prohibits the Department of Finance from using sales prices to value condos and coops, so instead they are required to be valued as if they were rental buildings. ?This valuation methodology can be very subjective and often generates numerous assessment errors within the class 2 properties.

Other Class 4 commercial properties witnessed an increase in value to $239 Billion, or 8.56% citywide, which stems from trended income and expense data provided by landlords who submitted their properties? financial performance last year. ?In addition to these increases, twenty-five percent of all Class 4 owners reported income increases of more than 9%. ?While this could be based on market traction within specific areas of the city, or for specific types of buildings, it could also be based on the fact that New York City values more than one million individual properties each year.? With so many often subjective considerations to value, the entire process leaves lots of room for error and subsequently revaluation appeals.

For an in-depth analysis of your properties? 2013/14 assessment, please contact Sharif Mitchell, Managing Consultant out of Paradigm?s New York City office at (646) 416-7893 or smitchell@paradigmtax.com.

Matt Damon takes over 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

By Kimberly Nordyke, The Hollywood Reporter

ABC

Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Jimmy Kimmel and Andy Garcia on "Jimmy Kimmel Sucks."

Matt Damon finally got his revenge on Jimmy Kimmel. The actor took control of Kimmel's late-night show Thursday night, starting with the credits -- the ABC show's title was tweaked to "Jimmy Kimmel Sucks" and the host's face had been defaced -- and continuing through the monologue, guest interviews and conclusion of the show.

VIDEO: 5 best clips of "Jimmy Kimmel Live"

The show started out with the video that had been released earlier in the day of Damon with a bound and gagged Kimmel, whom he had kidnapped. After the credits rolled -- where all the guests, including the musical act, were announced as being "Matt Damon" -- the actor wheeled Kimmel out on stage, still tied up with duct tape and gagged with a necktie.

"Welcome to tonight's episode of 'Jimmy Kimmel Sucks.' I am your host, Matt Damon," he said. "Let me ask you this, as an audience is it weird to see a person with actual talent host this show?"

Damon went on to explain that Kimmel had bumped him from the show "1,205 times" -- a reference to when Kimmel first started his talk show and began signing off with the line "Apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time" -- the joke being that no guest that he had on air possessed the star power of Damon.

He said he'd been "waiting for this moment for a long, long time. This is like when I lost my virginity except this is gonna last way longer than one second."

Damon also likened himself to Luke Skywalker and Kimmel to the Death Star, saying of Kimmel: "He's big and round and easily destroyed through his garbage hole."

He continued: "Look at Jimmy over there, with a gag in his mouth. You've never been funnier, my friend. Jimmy Kimmel is to late-night talk show hosts what Magic Johnson is to ... late-night talk show hosts."

Damon also went on to make some changes at the show, including replacing sidekick Guillermo with Andy Garcia -- who came complete with heavy, Guillermo-like accent -- and bandleader Cleto Escobedo Jr. with Sheryl Crow (who later performed her new single, "Easy"). Ben Affleck also popped up as a cue-card holder who demonstrated his loyalty to Kimmel, while Robin Williams dropped by to do jokes during the monologue.

"This is unbelievable -- it took Jimmy 10 years to accomplish what I just accomplished in 90 seconds," Damon said of the show's changes.

He explained that the origin of all the "hatred and bitterness" is that Kimmel is an aspiring actor and Damon has beaten him out for every role he wanted. A video of Kimmel's "auditions" showed him trying out for roles in "Good Will Hunting," "Adjustment Bureau," "Happy Feet 2," "We Bought a Zoo," "Stuck on You" and "The Bourne Ultimatum," during which Kimmel was confused about who was playing Jason Bourne despite the fact that the movie was the third in the Damon-starring franchise.

VIDEO: Matt Damon kidnaps Jimmy Kimmel ahead of long-awaited "Live!" appearance

A slew of A-listers popped up as guests -- Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore -- all of whom continued the joke, saying that Kimmel "f------ sucks" (Kidman), is a liar who once cooked DiGiorno's Pizza and passed it off as homemade (Moore) and slipped the tongue during an on-air kiss (Adams).

At one point, Damon quipped: "Jimmy is always complaining about how hard it is it book celebrities on this show. We're only halfway through and I've booked seven big celebrities -- and that's not even counting me!"

Several other famous faces -- along with Kimmel's parents -- also appeared in recorded videos to praise Damon. Said Don Cheadle: "Thank you for allowing America to laugh again." Kimmel's parents, meanwhile, told Damon that he was "the son we always wanted."

Damon also brought out Kimmel's ex, Sarah Silverman, with whom Damon shot the "I'm F------ Matt Damon" video that went viral in 2008 (Kimmel and Affleck later released a follow-up, "I'm F------ Ben Affleck"). Silverman described her relationship with Kimmel to the fill-in host.

"You know when you're in New York and you pass those hot dog vendors and you think, 'I'm not going to eat one, it's not for me,' and then the smell gets to you, and you pound two or three of them? And then later one, you're puking, 'Why did I put this inside of me?' And you think about the encasing and all the entrails that are probably in there? So I guess it's like that."

Kimmel, incidentally, barely uttered a word during the entire episode despite being onstage the entire time.

At the end of the show, Damon asked Kimmel: "Is there anything you want to say before we wrap things up? Wait, I'm sorry, we're out of time."

During the East Coast airing, Kimmel tweeted: "You win this round Matt Damon. But I will win the war."

Frustration

I wanted to discuss in general a little about this forum site and other things. I am not totally sure this is the right place to put this particular topic but well, I'm sure an admin will move it if it's wrong. I've tried many times to suggest improvements for the site and a few have been added but my major beef is with the advertising and gathering of new players for a rp. I still think that if the forum was separated into genres it would make it easier. So if you want to play a fantasy rp you go under fantasy and all the people looking for players in that type of rp will be listed and only those. That way you have less of a chance of being bumped off the page so quickly. Though since some genres are super popular it won't help as much as with others. I don't know exactly what else they could do to make it better. I mean I think I did a pretty good job making a decent rp but no one ever joins. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Plus I don't have confidence in finding a good rp either. It's really hard to find the kind of rps I like in such a huge pile of entries. One of the admins mentioned tagging and I think I tagged mine but so many people don't bother or forget. I don't know I guess I just wanted to complain and see what others thought about this.

Groups seek $716m for Yemen humanitarian crisis

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Yemen's government and international donors must allocate over $700 million to help ease a deepening humanitarian crisis that includes widespread malnutrition in the Arabian peninsula's poorest country, U.N. agencies and international aid groups said Tuesday in a joint appeal.

International donors have pledged $7.9 billion in aid for Yemen to rebuild its crumbling economy and upgrade the country's infrastructure damaged during years of political turmoil and militant attacks. But it's unclear how much of that money has been dedicated for more immediate needs such as ensuring clear water and reliable food and medical supplies, the groups said during a gathering in Dubai.

Relief groups said at least $716 million is needed to address the immediate humanitarian concerns.

"We're asking the world that this be prioritized," said the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. "There will be no political stability in Yemen if we do not deal with the humanitarian crisis."

Ahmed estimated that 1 million children face acute malnutrition amid ongoing violence by militant factions and instability after the end of the three-decade rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh last year. He said 300,000 are at risk of dying from hunger, without explaining further how he came by that estimate.

Tuesday's consolidated appeal, which included U.N. organization such as UNICEF and UNHCR, follows a World Food Program report in September that said that nearly half of the 24 million Yemenis go to bed hungry every night.

International donors ? including Europe, China, the U.S. and Gulf Arab states ? have promised billions to Yemen, but are also demanding that Yemeni officials hasten political and security reforms. The West and allies fear Islamist militants could exploit Yemen's security weakness to gain more sway over the country.

New Form Of Cotton Can Grab Nearly Three And A Half Times Its Own Weight Of Water Out Of Thin Air

51961A new treatment applied to cotton called PNIPAAm can make the material absorb up to 340% of its own weight in water from misty air and then release it as temperatures heat up. This makes it ideal for gathering water in desert and mountain environments. By comparison, untreated cotton can absorb only 18% of its weight in water.

Ultra-small devices for energy-efficient electronics

Jan. 21, 2013 ? A team of scientists from Tyndall National Institute?at University College Cork and the National University of Singapore have designed and fabricated ultra-small devices for energy-efficient electronics. By finding out how molecules behave in these devices, a ten-fold increase in switching efficiency was obtained by changing just one carbon atom. These devices could provide new ways to combat overheating in mobile phones and laptops, and could also aid in electrical stimulation of tissue repair for wound healing.

The breakthrough creation of molecular devices with highly controllable electrical properties will appear in the February issue of Nature Nanotechnology. Dr. Damien Thompson at the Tyndall National Institute, UCC and a team of researchers at the National University of Singapore led by Prof. Chris Nijhuis designed and created the devices, which are based on molecules acting as electrical valves, or diode rectifiers.

Dr. Thompson explains, "These molecules are very useful because they allow current to flow through them when switched ON and block current flow when switched OFF. The results of the study show that simply adding one extra carbon is sufficient to improve the device performance by more than a factor of ten. We are following up lots of new ideas based on these results, and we hope ultimately to create a range of new components for electronic devices." Dr. Thompson's atom-level computer simulations showed how molecules with an odd number of carbon atoms stand straighter than molecules with an even number of carbon atoms. This allows them to pack together more closely. Tightly-packed assemblies of these molecules were formed on metal electrode surfaces by the Nijhuis group in Singapore and were found to be remarkably free of defects. These high quality devices can suppress leakage currents and so operate efficiently and reliably. The device can be cleanly switched on and off purely on the basis of the charge and shape of the molecules, just like in the biological nanomachines that regulate photosynthesis, cell division and tissue growth.

Tyndall Electronic Theory Group leader Prof. Jim Greer explains: "Modern electronic devices such as telephones and tablets in manufacture today rely on tiny switches approaching molecular sizes. This provides new challenges for electronics but opens up exciting opportunities for blending molecular properties to be used to advantage. Dr. Thompson?s work is an exciting new avenue to exploit molecular design to achieve new ways to perform information processing." A key enabling feature for nanoscale electronics will be the ability to use molecules as rectifiers and switches. By demonstrating the rational design of molecules that rectify current with a large and highly-reproducible ON/OFF ratio, the study provides a key advance towards the creation of technologically viable ultra-small device components. Fifty thousand of the rectifier molecules strung end to end would fit across the diameter of a human hair. Advances in computing, synthesis and characterisation means scientists can now understand and control material at the scale of atoms and molecules.

The study was funded on the Irish side by a Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator award to Dr. Thompson. The computer simulations were performed on Science Foundation Ireland-supported computing clusters at Tyndall and at the Irish Centre for High End Computing. The combined experiments and simulations show for the first time that minute improvements in molecule orientation and packing trigger changes in van der Waals forces that are sufficiently large to dramatically improve the performance of electronic devices. Dr. Thompson explains: "These van der Waals forces are the weakest of all intermolecular forces and only become significant when summed over large areas. Hence, up until now, the majority of research into ultra-small devices has used stronger "pi-pi" interactions to stick molecules together, and has ignored the much weaker, but ubiquitous, van der Waals interactions. The present study shows how van der Waals effects, which are present in every conceivable molecular scale device, can be tuned to optimise the performance of the device."

The devices are based on molecules that act as diodes by allowing current to pass through them when operated at forward bias and blocking current when the bias is reversed. Molecular rectifiers were first proposed back in 1974, and advances in scientific computing have allowed molecular?level design to be used over the past decade to develop new organic materials that provide better electrical responses. However, the relative importance of the interactions between the molecules, the nature of the molecule-metal contact and the influence of environmental effects have been questioned. This new research demonstrates that dramatic improvements in device performance may be achieved by controlling the van der Waals forces that pack the molecules together. Simply changing the number of carbon atoms by one provides significantly more stable and more reproducible devices that exhibit an order of magnitude improvement in ON/OFF ratio. The research findings demonstrate the feasibility of boosting device performances by creating tighter seals between molecules.

"The development of molecular scale electronics is heavily reliant on simulation and high performance computing", commented Prof. Greer. "The continued support for research infrastructure in Ireland allows for the scientific advances that lead to enhanced interaction with global industry leaders, and positions Ireland to be a key provider of research with impact."

Important Auto Insurance Tips For Anyone Who Owns A Vehicle ...

Buying the right insurance for your car is essential to prevent financial difficulties when an accident occurs. The article below will describe how to ask the right questions from your broker or agent, what coverage to buy and how to avoid duplicate coverage. Read the article and ask the right questions from your insurance professional.

There is a grace period of sixty days in which an insurance company decides whether to keep you as a customer. While the days go by, the company makes sure that you?re not a large risk to their business. You might have higher premiums in the future if your policy is terminated.

If you have any outstanding traffic or parking tickets, be sure to pay them before switching auto insurers. Insurance companies will check your driving history, so you want to make sure any outstanding fines are paid up. You may enjoy a discount on your insurance costs. Furthermore, paying your fines is part of your civic duty.

Instead of paying your automobile insurance on a monthly basis, consider saving money by paying in 6 or 12 month increments. It is common for insurance agencies to add around $4 to a monthly bill. The extra money you spend could easily add up. If you are paying a lot of bills this may become hard. This is good incentive to lower the number of payments.

As soon as another driver living under your roof buys an insurance policy of their own, make sure they are removed from your policy. This will ensure that your premium payments are reduced accordingly. If you covered your children on your own policy while they were teenagers, which is a wise idea, your insurance costs will drop when they buy their own policies and get off of yours. Taking a driver off your policy will almost always reduce your rates.

Carpooling or taking the bus are both good ideas. Insurance companies are very happy with responsible clients. Try activities, such as taking public transportation or carpooling, to work to see if you can find a way to reduce your insurance premium.

You will want to remove any driver from your auto insurance policy who no longer drives your vehicle. If there are other drivers on your policy, consider removing them in order to save some money on your premiums.

When you are shopping around for auto insurance, get quotes from many companies. Rates can vary dramatically from one provider to the next. You want to shop around to find the best price, and you should check rates with different providers at least once a year. When you get car insurance quotes from different companies, make sure they apply to an equal amount of coverage.

When you have good car insurance, it can make a world of difference if an accident occurs. Having the right coverage can save you a lot of hassle when something happens to your car. Use the article above to get the answers you need to obtain the coverage right for you.

Musial, Weaver were very different

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:55 a.m. ET Jan. 20, 2013

One was born in St. Louis, the other became a star there.

Aside from that, Earl Weaver and Stan Musial were about as different as two Hall of Famers could be.

"Talk about your odd couple," said George Vecsey, the longtime sports columnist for The New York Times who wrote a recent biography of Musial.

Weaver was a 5-foot-6 rabble rouser whose penchant for quarreling with umpires belied a cerebral approach to managing that has stood the test of time. Musial was a humble slugger with a funky batting stance who was beloved by Cardinals fans and respected by pretty much everyone else.

Saturday began with news of Weaver's death at age 82, and by the end of the night Musial had died, too, leaving baseball to reflect on two distinguished careers rich in contrasts.

"Earl was well known for being one of the game's most colorful characters with a memorable wit, but he was also amongst its most loyal," Commissioner Bud Selig said.

Selig later released a statement after Musial's death at age 92.

"Stan's life embodies baseball's unparalleled history and why this game is the national pastime. As remarkable as `Stan the Man' was on the field, he was a true gentleman in life," Selig said.

A three-time MVP and seven-time National League batting champion, Musial helped the Cardinals win three World Series championships in the 1940s. His popularity in St. Louis can be measured by the not one, but two statues that stand in his honor outside Busch Stadium. After his death Saturday, Cardinals of more recent vintage began offering condolences almost immediately.

"Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform," said a message posted on the Twitter account of Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday.

Albert Pujols, who led St. Louis to World Series titles in 2006 and 2011 before leaving as a free agent before last season, offered prayers for Musial's family via Twitter.

"I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live," said a message posted on Pujols' site. "Rest in Peace."

Weaver was born in St. Louis, but his greatest success came as a manager in Baltimore. He took the Orioles to the World Series four times, winning one title in 1970.

Never a fan of small-ball strategies like bunting and stealing bases, Weaver preferred to wait for a three-run homer, always hoping for a big inning that could break the game open.

"No one managed a ballclub or pitching staff better than Earl," said Davey Johnson, who played under Weaver with the Orioles.

Johnson now manages the Washington Nationals and ran the Orioles from 1996-97.

"He was decades ahead of his time," Johnson said. "Not a game goes by that I don't draw on something Earl did or said. I will miss him every day."

While Musial could let his bat do the talking, Weaver was more than willing to shout to be heard. His salty-tongued arguing with umpires will live on through YouTube, and Orioles programs sold at the old Memorial Stadium frequently featured photos of Weaver squabbling.

Former umpire Don Denkinger remembered a game in which the manager disputed a call with Larry McCoy at the plate.

"Earl tells us, `Now I'm gonna show you how stupid you all are.' Earl goes down to first base and ejects the first base umpire. Then he goes to second base and ejects the second base umpire. I'm working third base and now he comes down and ejects me," Denkinger said.

Musial was a quieter type who spent his career far removed from the bright lights of places like New York and Boston. But his hitting exploits were certainly on par with contemporaries Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.

"I knew Stan very well. He used to take care of me at All-Star games, 24 of them," Hall of Famer Willie Mays said. "He was a true gentleman who understood the race thing and did all he could. Again, a true gentleman on and off the field - I never heard anybody say a bad word about him, ever."

Dave Anderson of The New York Times recalled growing up in Brooklyn, rooting for Musial. Those Dodgers crowds helped give Musial his nickname, Stan the Man.

"I thought he was going to knock the fence down in Brooklyn, he'd hit it so often," Anderson said.

Musial did it despite an odd left-handed stance - with his legs and knees close together, he would cock the bat near his ear and twist his body away from the pitcher before uncoiling when the ball came.

If that was a lasting snapshot of Musial, the images of Weaver will stay just as fresh - the feisty manager, perhaps with his hat turned backward, looking up at an umpire and screaming at him before kicking dirt somewhere and finally leaving the field.

None of those histrionics should obscure the fact that in the end, Weaver often had the last laugh - to the tune of a .583 career winning percentage.

"When you discuss our game's motivational masters, Earl is a part of that conversation," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said. "He was a proven leader in the dugout and loved being a Hall of Famer. Though small in stature, he was a giant as a manager."

Walmart Accused Of Gift Receipt Scam For 2nd Year In A Row

Sure go ahead and regift that present your friend bought for you at Walmart, but whatever you do, don't return it.

The world's largest retailer is apparently slacking off on giving full refunds to customers with gift receipts, at least according to a recent report by CBS Boston.

When a producer from the network attempted to return a TV originally purchased for $248 using a gift receipt, she was only able to get back $228 -- the unit's new on-sale price. A cashier told her simply that the register "will just generate however much [the original buyer] paid for it,? even though in this case the original purchase price was higher.

This is far from the first time such allegations have been made against Walmart. Last year, the same CBS affiliate aired similar reports that Walmart was shortchanging customers on gift receipts.

The confusion may have to do with the simple fact that such receipts don't show how much money was originally paid for an item. Consumer advocate Edgar Dworsky says he doesn't think Walmart is perpetrating the scam on purpose, but the retailer clearly has a problem on its hands.

?The best scam is when you don?t even know you?ve been taken,? Dworsky told CBS Boston.

CBS reports on such incidents last year led to an investigation by a lawfirm specializing in consumer protection. Similar incidents at Kohl's and Toys R' Us led to the inclusion of those retailers in the investigation as well.

A request for comment from Walmart via email was not immediately returned. However, back in 2011, Walmart spokesperson Lorenzo Lopez had this to say on the matter:

It?s our expectation to refund the original purchase price when returning an item with a gift receipt. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers. If they have questions regarding a gift receipt, we encourage them to speak with a member of management at their local store.
