Hubble portrays a dusty spiral galaxy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has provided another outstanding image of a nearby galaxy -- NGC 4183, seen with a beautiful backdrop of distant galaxies and nearby stars. Located about 55 million light-years from the sun and spanning about eighty thousand light-years, NGC 4183 is a little smaller than the Milky Way. This galaxy, which belongs to the Ursa Major Group, lies in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs).

NGC 4183 is a spiral galaxy with a faint core and an open spiral structure. Unfortunately, this galaxy is viewed edge-on from Earth, and we cannot fully appreciate its spiral arms. But we can admire its galactic disk.

The disks of galaxies are mainly composed of gas, dust and stars. There is evidence of dust over the galactic plane, visible as dark intricate filaments that block the visible light from the core of the galaxy. In addition, recent studies suggest that this galaxy may have a bar structure. Galactic bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing star formation, which is typically more pronounced in the spiral arms than in the bulge of the galaxy.

British astronomer William Herschel first observed NGC 4183 on 14 January 1778.

This picture was created from visible and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

This image uses data identified by Luca Limatola in the Hubble's Hidden Treasures image processing competition.

'Looper' takes audiences on a thrill ride

Sony Pictures

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Looper."

By Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: "Looper" is a clever, entertaining science fiction thriller that neatly blurs the line between suicide and murder. An existential conundrum wrapped in a narrowly conceived yarn about victims sent back in time to be bumped off by assassins called loopers, Rian Johnson's third and most ambitious feature keeps the action popping while sustaining interest in the long arc of a story about a man assigned to kill the 30 years-older version of himself.

A lively, high-profile choice to open this year's Toronto International Film Festival, this Sony release co-starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same role should chalk up sizable returns in the wake of its Sept. 28 theatrical bow.

VIDEO: "Looper" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt on getting kicked in the head by Bruce Willis

Probably the shakiest aspect of Johnson's original screenplay is what it asks the viewer to buy about the future: A mere 62 years from now, in 2074, time travel has become possible, but such a momentous breakthrough is limited to serving as a body-disposal system. Under the prevailing authority, time jumping is strictly outlawed because of its potential for messing with history. A large criminal mob, run by an overlord called The Rainmaker, defiantly uses it but only as a vehicle for assassination, with ?loopers? -- disreputable gunmen living in 2044 -- laying in wait for people to execute so no bodies or other evidence can be found in the future.

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt chat about playing a younger and older version of the same character in "Looper."

But the premise is established in nifty fashion; the doomed, hooded with hands bound behind them, suddenly materialize in an empty field, and the looper immediately blows him away with his blunderbuss. One such executioner is Joe (Gordon-Levitt), a retro-looking hipster who drives a very old red Miata and wears ties, ?a 20th century affectation? that offends his crankily genial boss, Abe (Jeff Daniels). If he can get out of this racket, he says he'd like to go to France, which earns him further scorn from the older man; ?I'm from the future, you should go to China,? he scolds.

PHOTOS: Movies with different actors in the same role

Backed by a cynically confessional voice-over track from Joe that is not as self-consciously hardboiled as the commentary Gordon-Levitt read for Johnson in "Brick" seven years ago, Looper?mostly is set in a seedy metropolis that doesn't look all that different from sketchy neighborhoods in some big cities today; there are derelicts, bombed-out buildings, ruined cars and enough other signs of urban ills to suggest that, in Johnson's view, things will just gradually decline over the next three decades.

Joe hangs out in clubs, sees a sexy woman (Piper Perabo) who works in one of them and tries to help a friend and fellow looper, Seth (Paul Dano), who's imminently endangered by a new development that's come down from on high: They're ?closing all the loops,? meaning they're sending the ?future selves? of all the loopers back to be killed.

Almost immediately, Joe is in the same jam. When, a half-hour into the film, he goes to the field to do his next job, the guy who pops up to be shot is not hooded. Joe's hesitation allows the older man to escape, and it's clear who he is: It's Joe as his older self. And, for his failure to kill him, young Joe is in a pile of trouble with Abe and his ?gats,? first-class hired guns.

STORY: "Looper" interactive trailer reveals new interviews, behind-the-scenes footage?

When the two Joes finally sit down -- across from each other in a diner in the middle of nowhere -- there's no doubt they're working at cross purposes: Young Joe is determined to kill his older self, while old Joe is dead set on tracking down and taking out The Rainmaker, who would be a little kid in 2044, so his late wife won't die at his hands after all.

The biggest problem facing the makers of "Looper" is how to make the audience believe that the trim, long-faced Gordon-Levitt could somehow change so much in 30 years that he would look like the thicker-built and shorter-nosed Willis. The solution lay in altering the younger actor's appearance, imperceptibly at first, but gradually to morph his dark eyes into Willis' gray-green and to reshape his nose and eyebrows, either with makeup or digitally or perhaps both. At first, the effect is a bit odd, and you can't quite put your finger on what's off; then it feels downright weird to be looking at a version of Gordon-Levitt who is no longer the actor you've known for a few years now.

This is especially noticeable during the film's second half, much of which takes place at young Joe's place of refuge, the isolated home of feisty young farmer and single mom Sara (Emily Blunt), who has an unusually gifted son, Cid (Pierce Gagnon). Even as the temperature is kept at a low simmer, the film's pace deliberately is slowed here to develop some intimacy between these two isolated people and give some screen time to the kid, who pretty obviously will provide the reason for old Joe to eventually head for the farm. The eventual ending is great, the resolution to the tricky time maneuvering very impressively worked out.

VIDEO: "Looper" trailer puts Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a tough spot: Killing Bruce Willis

Shot mostly in Louisiana, with a bit done in Shanghai, the film looks tightly made on a budget but sacrifices nothing for that; the world depicted looks dirty, dangerous and ramshackle, with a few high-tech touches here and there.

Their physical disparity notwithstanding, Gordon-Levitt and Willis both come across strongly, while Blunt effectively reveals Sara's tough and vulnerable sides. Daniels is particularly amusing as the garrulous old enforcer holding down the future's outpost in the past.

Command to promote Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Awareness

This post was originally published by Tinker Air Force Base - Headlines

September 28, 2012 in Oklahoma, Tinker Air Force Base by clevine

?During October, Air Force Materiel Command will be promoting Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Awareness. This is an excellent time to educate individuals about breast and prostate cancer and promote screening. Knowing about these diseases and what you can do can save your life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in eight women in the United States will get breast cancer. Men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer, but this is rare. Breast cancer can occur at any age, but it is more likely to occur after age 40. Family history and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors may increase a women's chance of having breast cancer. Screening for breast cancer includes mammograms, breast exams by a physician, and self breast exams. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to be screened.

MUSIGA To Vomit ?20 Billion

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has been asked to account for the GH?2 million (?20 billion) the Government of Ghana set aside in the 2012 budget to boost the creative arts industry.MUSIGA has gone for the money and is using it without the approval of other stakeholders in the creative arts industry and this has led to some bad blood between the union and other stakeholders in the creative arts industry.

The Music Council of Ghana (MCG) will be leading a delegation of music/creative arts stakeholders to present a petition to President John Mahama over the issue and also hit the streets on a demonstration meant to draw attention to the issue of the GH?2 million.

Reports reaching NEWS-ONE say MUSIGA is hot over the issue and has fallen on leading figures within the industry to call for a dialogue rather than demonstration.

On Wednesday, Ahuma Ocansey, popularly known as Daddy Bosco, was said to have represented MUSIGA at a meeting with the aggrieved stakeholders and pleaded for an amicable settlement of the matter.

Meanwhile, MUSIGA President Bice Obour Kufour is cooling off in New York, apparently absolutely unperturbed about the development.

A press statement signed by Justice Cletus ,general secretary, Music Council of Ghana noted: ?After waiting patiently for the Government through the Ministry of Chieftaincy & Culture to invite all stakeholders in the music/creative industry for appropriate disbursement of the GH?2, 000,000 budgetary allocation from the government of Ghana to the entire creative industry, we are indeed heartbroken and refuse to accept any such criteria or justification which warranted the total disbursement of this whole sum to one union of musicians called MUSIGA by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Chieftaincy Ministry.

?MUSIGA does not represent the interest of the entirety of the Ghanaian Music/Creative industry and we don?t see any error or oversight that some may want to use to cover the role played by both the Ministries of Finance & Chieftaincy/Culture towards the processing and facilitation of this very questionable disbursement which His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana has openly condemned and disassociated himself from the dubious payment of the said amount to MUSIGA.?

Not long after the budget was read, MUSIGA President Bice ?Obour? Kufour told several media houses that the money was for his musicians union alone and true to his words, they have hijacked the funds and left out all other stakeholders.

Speaking with Hitz FM, an Accra-based private radio station recently, ace hi-life musician Rex Omar, who is chairman of Business for MUSIGA, insisted that the money solely belonged to the musicians union, contrary to speculations.

According to him, ?MUSIGA applied for GH?2 million and it has been given to MUSIGA,? adding, if the money was meant for the creative industry, ?how come MUSIGA was able to access it and not the creative industry?

MUSIGA sent a specific proposal to do specific things?.

Meanwhile, the circumstances under which the Ministry of Finance released the money to MUSIGA alone are quite mysterious, especially when the Minister of Finance, in reading the budget statement, had categorically stated that the money was for the creative arts industry.

The Finance Minister, when he made the announcement, even went on to explain what he meant by the creative arts industry:

?Madam Speaker, Ghana has a vibrant creative arts industry that can be nurtured to create jobs and provide increase income to all stakeholders.

The industry covers creative sectors such as music, film video and photography, visual and performing arts, publishing, etc.

Global trade in creative goods and services remained very robust during the financial and economic meltdown, with the value of global export of creative goods and services reaching nearly US$600 billion between 2002 and 2008.?

?193. Ghana can benefit immensely if it begins to tap the creative sector of the economy, particularly those of the music and film industry.

But this will require an evaluation of the potential of the creative industry to contribute to the growth of the economy.

Beginning in 2012, therefore, Government will collaborate with the music industry to identify the potential of the industry through an impact assessment study.

The study will be used to support the preparation of a medium term strategic framework that will guide the development of the industry.

Government will also support the organisation of the 2012 Ghana Music Fair.

?194. An amount of GH?2.0 million has been allocated to support the creative arts industry in 2012,?was what Finance Minister Dufour told Parliament when he read the 2012 budget last year November.

This is what is also captured in the 2012 budget under the subhead line ?Boosting the Creative Arts Industry?.

10 Mompreneurs Who Made It Big | Toddler Times

top4 300x261 10 Mom Entrepreneurs Who Made It BigI?ve always been inspired by women in business. Particularly, mothers. Even more-so now, years after I?ve started up my own small business and began freelancing as a writer. (It still feels somewhat odd to type out those words). I?ve face hard truths and have had to make tough financial decisions.

When I first thought of opening up my own business, I must admit I didn?t give much thought to the added toll that the first few years of launching a brand (successfully) would have on my family. I only thought of the future. Our financial security for the future. The present got lost. A very tough lesson to learn on measuring what is really important in life. To me, anyways.

That?s when I began to look for success stories. To surround myself with other mothers who were entrepreneurs and working really hard to keep everything afloat and dare I say it, even become?successful. It?s no easy feat juggling work and home life, no matter how you?re working it. To me, making it big as an entrepreneur doesn?t just equal fame and fortune.

Being a?successful?mom?entrepreneur?is all about remaining financially aware and responsible. Staying on top of market and social/technological trends and developing a brand that respects the world we live in, inspires and supports other mothers. Leaders of innovative invention and?solutions?to real issues.

Caroline Freedman & Lauren McCollough of NurturMe

They saw a void in the baby food market. Everything was jarred, thick and heavy - often full of preservatives to keep it "fresh." Together, they created a product line of dehydrated powdered baby food made from organic fruits and veggies that reconstitutes itself with water, milk, or breastmilk. In it's first 10 months, NurturMe went big; sales sky-rocketed and orders started coming in from national chains like Target, Babies 'R' Us and Whole Foods. All that's next for these two mamas is the acquisition of their brand and they can retire for life!

Eden Hertzog of New Moon Cookies

Just because she's my good pal doesn't mean she's not fair game. Conflict of interest? Nah. This woman means business and has been incredibly successful in it. New Moon Kitchen is a vegan brand of cookies that actually taste good. She went from operating out of an apartment with a gas powered confection oven plugged in the living room, making deliveries around Toronto; to running a large warehouse staffed with a bevy of full-time employees. Employees who all reap the benefits of four-day workweeks, in-house yoga classes and shiatsu treatments. New Moon cookies can now be found across Canada and the U.S. in pretty much every major grocery store and Whole Foods Market. Eden herself is the momma to a wily toddler and expecting #2.

Laura Berg of My Smart Hands

Laura Berg has written the holy grail of baby signing. She may very well be the one responsible for the huge trend that it is now. What began a self-created curriculum for her grade 8 students to better help them learn through ASL (American Sign Language), quickly turned into the trademarked brand, My Smart Hands. An international company with over 100 instructors and going strong, Laura's vision and expertise has turned into a company that teaches parents and teachers how to sign with their babies; long before they can talk and to communicate with their hearing impaired children and students.

Belinda Takahashi of The Juno Company

As a classically trained musician, Belinda felt that the world of music for little ones was bereft of quality. Of this we know. Most kid's music? Just. UGH. So she started producing classical music videos and DVDs for kids, featuring her own original stylings. What were once home-movies, The Juno Company quickly became a TV series for babies and preschoolers and of course, the ever popular baby/toddler crack: apps.

Liz Lange of Liz Lange Maternity

As founder and Creative Director of her own maternity line, Liz is well known around the Babbles. If you're pregnant, been pregnant or even thinking about it, you've probably heard of her, especially since she began designing the maternity lines for Target and Nike on top of her own. Liz became pregnant just four months into the launch of her small business (then). Clearly that didn't intercept her success in becoming internationally known, even publishing her own book, 'Liz Lange's Maternity Style: How to look fabulous during the most fashion-challenged time'.

I chose Michelle as a successful entrepreneur of absolute distinction. Her popular website Venus Vision is dedicated to promoting the self-esteem in women. ALL women of varying shapes, sizes, skin colour, religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds. I haven't seen nearly enough of this on the web, done with such well received success. One of her goals that stands out the most to me is Promoting Self Acceptance Amongst Women. I see Michelle as an entrepreneur who made it big because of the vital work she is doing in the on-line community for women and others, and to be able to make a living in doing so. She is a shining example of how much work, knowledge and organization it takes to start-up a business and keep it going.

    Paula Deen

Y'all, I LOVE this woman. She is a true survivor. I'm sure not much of an introduction is needed here, as her face and gregarious, winsome personality is pretty famous. However, what you may not know is that Paula Deen didn't always have it so good. Death and tragedy early in life didn't get the best of her, neither did her debilitating agoraphobia. She went from (with the help of her two charming boys), operating her own catering company out of their home to publishing a bunch of top selling cookbooks, is a Food Network star and runs two swanky restaurants oozing the Southern hospitality and charm she is known for. Oprah is her #1 fan.

Selecting A Bird Cagewith me | Marijuana for MRSA

Needless to say?

Birds are one of the most favored pets in the world. The bird lovers irrespective of the bird species they select, the spot they hold them, would no doubt like to pick a sturdy and comfy cage for their pets. There are plenty of bird cages readily available in the marketplace in a variety of sizes and shapes the selection of a suitable cage for your pet is a challenge. 1 has to be aware about the makes use of and abuses of the home of their pets to make a wise decision.

Needless to say birds like far more space to move around and as such one must not strictly confine to the size prescribed for the pet. It is constantly recommended to go for the largest size readily available in the industry to see that your pet has usually the luxury of freedom of optimum space.

While considering the shape of the birdcage one needs to bear in mind that most frequently located cylindrical cages are not the finest suited for these small flying creatures. Lengthy cages facilitate horizontal flying often preferred by the little birds and as such is a lot more essential than the height. Birds seldom fly up and down. Significant birds like parrots want to be offered with cages taller in size to suit their habit of climbing up as a routine physical exercise. The large birds constantly deserve spacious and bigger cages. Even though the cage manufacturers are conscious about the danger of incorrect wire spacing of cages, and take adequate care in this aspect one particular has to guarantee that they are uniformly and adequately spaced so as to stay away from any danger to the birds by acquiring caught their heads, wings or beaks inside the wire or bar.

Some of the greater birds like parrots would be greatest housed in cages with horizontal bars enabling it to climb up with aid of their beaks. No such specification need be considered for smaller birds like doves, finches and canaries.

Though value of the cage is usually a factor to take into account when getting a cage 1 must not go for the bird cages made of cheaper supplies as it could turn to be hazardous for the pets. One particular has to make certain that the cages need be made of non toxic materials like stainless steel, or powder coated iron that are harmless for these species. Cages that are created of galvanized wires containing zinc have to be avoided. The style of the cage should be such that it makes it possible for easy cleaning and upkeep. Specific peculiar shaped cages though offers a different appear causes problems for straightforward normal cleaning of the cages that is of paramount importance to preserve the birds healthy and hygienic.

The spacing of the bars or the material employed for the cage is not the only aspects that matter. The doors, latches and related parts of the cage really should have a fine finish not to endanger these lovely pets. male masturbator

In brief, deciding on a right birdcage takes time and it is worthy spending some time and thinking that would lead to a healthful life, security and comfort of your dear pet birds.

Making Easy Child Friendly Home Improvements | My Blog

Posted by crafty88 on Sep 25, 2012 in SPORTS | Comments Off

When you paint interior rooms during a home improvement project, allow extra drying time if your house is new. Newer homes are usually built with extremely effective (nearly air-tight) separation between the interior and exterior. While this is an advantage for you as a homeowner in most situations, when you paint inside, your paint will take longer to dry than the paint manufacturer might claim.

Here is a home improvement for working with contractors! If you are having work done, be sure to inform the head of the crew if you are not happy! In the ideal world, everyone would understand and do exactly what you want, the way you want it done! If that is not the case, speak to the head of the crew! You are paying the bills, and you are in charge. If you aren?t happy, speak up. If things don?t work out with that contractor, there are lots of others to choose from.

Dirty ceiling vents can make your home look bad. You can purchase and install new ceiling vents, giving your home a cleaner and neater look.

If you are doing any home improvements on the roof of your home, make sure you wear the proper shoes so that you keep yourself safe. Many accidents in home improvements happen from people falling off their roofs. Be careful up there by wearing the right shoes and tie yourself off whenever possible.

When wanting to make a living out of home improvement, it is important that you have great people skills. If you do not have great people skills, when dealing with your clients it is very likely that you would lose quite a few jobs. It is better to be a people person, and make the money you want!

Begin the installation of your new kitchen cabinets by drawing a horizontal benchmark line around the perimeter of your entire kitchen. This level line will provide a reference point for you to measure from when installing your wall and base cabinets. Your benchmark line should begin at the highest point of your floor.

New wallpaper can transform a room. Before you add wallpaper, you need to find out what type of wall is under the existing wallpaper. Usually walls are either drywall or plaster smoothed over lath. You can figure out what kind of wall you are dealing with by feeling the wall, plaster is harder, smoother, and colder than drywall. You can also try tapping the wall, drywall sounds hollow while plaster does not.

Smoke detectors are required for safety in your home. Many homes only put them in certain areas. You can increase the safety in your home, by installing additional detectors in places like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. These areas can sometimes be overlooked, though prone to fires as much or more than the rest of the house.

Soak your hands in salad oil after completing an oil painting job. The oil will help release the paint from where it has splattered on your hands. Salad oil smells better and is a lot safer than the typical cleanup choices of mineral spirits or kerosene.

When getting ready to prime a room that is going to be painted, have your primer tinted so that it is the same color as the paint you are using. The primer will still do its job, but instead of needing three coats of paint, your walls will require only two.

Removing wall paper is something that may sound easy, but it actually takes some skill. You need to know what type of wallpaper you need to remove, and what type of wall you have. Based on the wallpaper you have, you then either need to dry-strip it or soak it and scrape it off. Make sure you do your research to determine what needs be done.

In summary, there are some obvious ideas that have been tested over time, as well as some newer techniques that you may not have considered. Hopefully, as long as you follow what we suggest in this article, you can either get started with your home improvement project or improve on what you have already done.

Presidential campaign is nice, and then again not

NEW YORK (AP) ? In a split-screen race for the presidency, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama were on their best campaign behavior in public Tuesday, all the while slashing away at each other in paid television ads.

In separate appearances in New York, they swapped criticism on foreign policy. But they did it politely, without mentioning each other by name.

Romney found fault with Obama's approach to education, but did so after paying a public compliment to Arne Duncan, who has the administration's Cabinet portfolio for the subject.

There was an outbreak of self-deprecating humor from Romney, as well, as he received a glowing introduction from former President Bill Clinton before speaking to the annual Clinton Global Initiative.

"If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do any man a lot of good," joked the Republican candidate for the White House, referring to the former' president's strong speech on Obama's behalf at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month.

"All I got to do now is wait a few days for that bounce to happen," Romney quipped.

Joking or not, it was as close as the Republican challenger has come to publicly acknowledging recent polls showing Obama moving ahead in several battleground states and gaining ground in national surveys.

Cut to the television ads, and the political reality both campaigns are trying to create for voters in battleground states.

Of the five commercials the Obama campaign says it is airing most frequently, one accuses Romney and running mate Paul Ryan of backing a plan for Medicare that would raise out-of-pocket costs for seniors. Another says the Republican challenger favors tax cuts for millionaires that could be paid for by reducing existing tax breaks for education expenses.

A third says Obama, not Romney, has pushed back against China's unfair trade policies. A fourth asserts that part of Romney's personal fortune is invested in China and says he's never stood up to the country. "All he's done is send them our jobs," it says.

The Romney campaign listed six ads currently airing, four of which criticize Obama.

"Dear Daughter. Welcome to America," says the announcer in a commercial that shows a young baby. "Your share of Obama's debt is over $50,000."

Two spots feature coal miners accusing the administration of pursuing policies that go after their industry. "Obama said he was going to bankrupt any new power plants that opened up ... He's keeping his promise," says a miner shown in one. "I've got two young grandsons. I'm scared for their futures, let alone mine."

A fourth accuses Obama of failing to "stand up to China." ".... His policies cost us 2 million jobs," it says.

In the world not made up of television commercials, one report released during the day showed consumer confidence climbing to the highest level since February. A second report said home prices increased in July as sales rose and foreclosures fell.

Taken together, that amounted to encouraging news for the president, given that the slow-growing economy and 8.1 percent national unemployment are the public's top issues in the race for the White House.

Whatever the economic news itself, voters increasingly say the country is heading in the right direction. In an Associated Press-GfK poll taken at mid-month, 48 percent of registered voters said they expect the economy to improve in the next 12 months, compared to only 41 percent who said so in a survey in August.

Additionally, 41 percent of registered voters said in this month's poll that the nation is heading in the right direction, up from 34 percent saying the same in August.

Obama's handling of the economy, still tepid, is better than it has been. The latest AP-GfK poll finds 48 percent of registered voters approve of the president's handling of the economy, while 49 percent disapprove. In June, 56 percent disapproved and 43 percent approved.

Romney spoke first during the day, speaking to Clinton's organization.

He said the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya two weeks ago was caused by a terrorist attack, something Obama has refrained from saying.

"Many Americans are troubled by the developments in the Middle East," Romney said. "Syria has witnessed the killings of tens of thousands of people. The president of Egypt is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. ... And Iran is moving toward nuclear weapons capability.

"We feel that we are at the mercy of events, rather than shaping events," he added, although he did not overtly criticize Obama's foreign policy, as he did on Monday.

Romney also said if he is elected, he will create "prosperity pacts" in the Middle East, private-public partnerships designed to remove barriers to free markets around the region. He said developing countries would receive U.S. assistance "focused on developing the institutions of liberty, the rule of law and property rights."

Obama, in a speech later in the morning to the U.N. General Assembly, said the recent assaults on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America" and called on world leaders to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world.

But in a slap at Romney, Obama said "let us remember that this is a season of progress" in the Arab World, where autocratic leaders have been deposed in several countries.

In another jab, he said, "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on peace."

Obama didn't mention it, but Romney says on a videotape that recently came to light that "the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace. The pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."

Newly discovered molecule could deliver drugs to treat diseases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Kansas State University researchers have discovered a molecule that may be capable of delivering drugs inside the body to treat diseases.

For the first time, researchers have designed and created a membrane-bounded vesicle formed entirely of peptides -- molecules made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. The membrane could serve as a new drug delivery system to safely treat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

A study led by John Tomich, professor of biochemistry at Kansas State University, has been published in the journal PLOS ONE in September, and a patent for the discovery is pending.

The peptides are a set of self-assembling branched molecules made up of naturally occurring amino acids. The chemical properties of a peptide create a vesicle that Tomich describes as a bubble: It's made up of a thin membrane and is hollow inside. Created in a water solution, the bubble is filled with water rather than air.

The peptides -- or bubbles -- can be made in a solution containing a drug or other molecule that becomes encapsulated as the peptide assembles, yielding a trapped compound, much like a gelatin capsule holds over-the-counter oral remedies. The peptide vesicles could be delivered to appropriate cells in the body to treat diseases and minimize potential side effects.

"We see this as a new way to deliver any kind of molecule to cells," Tomich said. "We know that in certain diseases subpopulations of cells have gone awry, and we'd like to be able to specifically target them instead of attacking every cell, including healthy ones."

The finding could improve gene therapy, which has the potential to cure diseases by replacing diseased cells with healthy ones. Gene therapy is being tested in clinical trials, but the biggest challenge is how best to deliver the genes.

Methods include cells with a virus being injected into the body, and liposomes -- fatty compounds -- carrying the genes. However, these methods may present some problems.

When a virus is used, the body's immune system can attack the virus or cause a tumor. Lipid-based systems may cause inflammation and may not properly bind to cells.

The peptides created by Kansas State University researchers have advantages over their lipid counterparts. The peptides have improved stability and durability, are easier and quicker to create, and they could be delivered to a specific area in the body.

The peptides can be designed to have the ability to target cells, tissues, tumors or organs, and to encapsulate chemical reagents, antibodies, toxins and inhibitors, Tomich said.

"We don't even begin to know all of the potential applications for this discovery," he said. "We envision that many products could be packaged and delivered using these peptides."

Partial funding for the study came from the Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center, National Institutes of Health and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

Kansas State University collaborators include Sushanth Gudlur, May 2012 doctoral graduate in biochemistry, who first published the results in a dissertation; Pinakin Sukthankar, doctoral student in biochemistry; Jian Gao, former postdoctoral fellow in the department of biochemistry; Luz Adriana Avila Flores, graduate research assistant in the department of biochemistry; Yasuaki Hiromasa, research assistant professor of biochemistry; and Jianhan Chen, assistant professor of biochemistry. Takeo Iwamoto from the Jikei University School of Medicine in Japan also was a collaborator.

Getting Started with Twitter Ads for Small Business - Deondesigns.ca

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

Are you among the one-third of small businesses in the U.S. using Twitter to promote your products and services? If so, you?re on the right track: Research from digital intelligence firm Compete shows Twitter followers are more than 60% more likely to visit your website and more than 50% more likely to make a purchase and recommend your company.

Many companies are content to allow Twitter accounts to grow organically, but some are looking to accelerate growth of their follower base and increase the reach of promotions. To that end, Twitter recently rolled out two new paid advertising options for small businesses, currently available via invitation: Promoted Accounts and Promoted Tweets.

According to Richard Alfonsi, VP of Global Online Sales at Twitter, ?Promoted Accounts are best for growing a loyal follower base, while Promoted Tweets are best for getting tweets in front of a larger audience to drive more clicks and engagement around a promotion, product launch or event.? Alfonsi notes that businesses of all types see success so far with these new products, from local businesses (such as bakeries, restaurants and photographers) to purely online businesses, such as online retailers and digital publications.

For both offerings, you can control how much you spend each day by setting a daily budget ? you bid how much you are willing to pay for a new follower or an engagement, and an auction determines the price you pay. There are no minimum monthly spend requirements and you can stop your advertising at any time. You also only pay for results, meaning you will only be charged when someone follows your Promoted Account or engages with your Promoted Tweets (an engagement with a Promoted Tweet can be a click, a retweet or a favorite).

When Should I Use Promoted Accounts?

If you?re primarily looking to build a relevant follower base, Promoted Accounts may be for you. Twitter will study your current followers to look for people with similar interests, and when they find a match, they?ll suggest your account in the user?s ?Who to Follow? section. Promoted Account campaigns can also be geo-targeted at the country and city level to reach users in specific locations.

Los Angeles-based photographer Drew Ressler used Promoted Tweets to accelerate his follower growth and find more people who would be interested in his photographs of electronic dance music DJs. He set a maximum budget of $7 per day and targeted Twitter users all over the world. Twitter automatically took care of the rest, identifying other Twitter users who were interested in the electronic music scene and who would be interested in Drew?s work. Drew gained over 1,300 new followers for @Rukes in just two months, at less than $0.30 per follower.

?I just set a budget, and I constantly get 17 to 20 new followers each day,? says Ressler.

When Should I Use Promoted Tweets?

Small businesses wanting to expand the reach of their message plus increase follower base should consider Promoted Tweets. Promoted Tweets are generated directly from your own tweets; Twitter will monitor your account for engagement and promote your best tweets to the top of a user?s feed.

?I?ve used Twitter ads for several months now, and they?ve helped me get to over 37,000 followers,? says nutrition blogger Tom Corson-Knowles. ?I tried both Promoted Accounts and Promoted Tweets, and I recommend promoting tweets hands down ? it?s had a much higher ROI for me. With Promoted Tweets, you can get targeted traffic to your website by paying per click, and then you get the added benefit of followers and tons of brand exposure on Twitter.?

Amelia Lerutte of luxury dog product company i Love Dogs, Inc. agrees.

?We started using Twitter ads earlier this year. Our initial strategy was to pay for both follows and retweets, but after a couple weeks, we only saw a slight increase in the growth rate for new followers. Since we?re a small business used to optimizing ads to suit our budget, we decided to stop using Promoted Accounts to pay for followers and instead focus on gaining retweets through Promoted Tweets,? says Lerutte.

According to Lerutte, the high volume of retweets the company has received has made the price point of Twitter ads well worth the investment.

?Through the use of Promoted Tweets, our company has a seen a positive increase in the number of natural followers and engagement with our brand on Twitter. We?ve even had our Promoted Tweets retweeted by celebrities. So even though we?re not paying for followers, Twitter ads have allowed us to become a big dog on Twitter, with more than 11,000 followers,? adds Lerutte.

How Should I Measure Results?

According to Alfonsi, the way clients measure results will vary by company and by each one?s business objective.

?Some businesses are trying to grow their community of advocates and measure success by the quality of engagement they?re seeing on Twitter, while others are trying to drive sales and store visits,? says Alfonsi.

Followers and clicks are beneficial, but you?ll see the most impact from your paid Twitter programs ?if you think about the ongoing conversation, not just the immediate payoff,? says Tom Burg, head of North American marketing at advertising technology company Criteo. Burg recommends small businesses think about Twitter ads as a way to create a ?funnel? for their business that eventually leads to a particular action, whether that?s a store visit, a coupon download or a purchase.

?Eventually it?s all about getting to a call to action,? adds Burg. ?With Twitter, you?re paying if someone clicks, but you should measure based on a cost-per-action model. Once they clicked, did they do the action you wanted them to, like download a whitepaper or a coupon??

To measure beyond followers and engagement, in addition to using Twitter?s results reporting, you can also use Google Analytics to see how much site traffic is coming from Twitter. You might also consider creating a special landing page where you can drive Twitter users, or develop Twitter-specific codes or coupons to track customers who find you through these funnels, writes Lisa Barone in Small Business Trends.

How Can I Get Started?

While these two offerings are currently available on an invitation-only basis, businesses can request access by filling out this form. Alfonsi says Twitter expects these products to eventually reach millions of small businesses, and the company will steadily increase the number of participants in the program in the coming months.

Just remember: Prior to kicking off your program, make sure your overall Twitter presence is robust.

?Before you spend money to promote your tweets or your Twitter account, you better be certain that there is something there worth following,? adds Barone. She recommends first creating a solid Twitter strategy and letting it run for a month or two to build up a history of quality tweets and engagement. This will not only help you to attract people but will also help Twitter match you with the right kind of users.

Also be prepared to make the most of each click: What offer or content awaits users on the other side? Make sure what you?re offering is compelling, so it?s worth paying to get people there.

Have you tried advertising on Twitter? Share your experience in the comments section.

Lawyer: Palestinian prisoner hospitalized in Israel

BETHLEHEM (Ma?an) -- Israeli authorities have transferred a Palestinian prisoner from Ramle prison clinic to a civilian hospital in central Israel, a lawyer said on Friday.

Alaa Addin Talal Hassouna from Hebron was taken to Assaf Harofeh Medical Center after a serious deterioration in his condition, Fadi Ubeidat of the Palestinian Authority?s prisoners ministry said.

Hassouna, 35, suffers from heart trouble after undergoing surgery, Ubeidat said.

The prisoner has been serving an 8-year sentence since October 2004. Israel refused to release him after he completed two thirds of his sentence despite his health troubles, Ubeidat added.

The Palestinian Authority is waging a diplomatic campaign for the release of prisoners with medical conditions, as well as those detained before the 1993 Oslo Accords.

Some 4,600 Palestinians are held by Israel in jails in the occupied West Bank and inside Israel.
