Heejun Han delivered his best performance of the season Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to keep him in the competition.

The Heejun Han musical comedy tour ended on ?American Idol? on Thursday, ironically following his best solo performance of the season.

After weeks of getting not-so-subtle hints that he should cut back on the jokes, culminating with Steven Tyler?s less-veiled swipe a week ago, Han cut out the act and did a straight-up performance of Donny Hathaway's ?A Song for You.? It was sweetly done and earned him a standing ovation.

But Jimmy Iovine summed up the situation best in his Thursday video clip. He praised Han?s effort but noted, ?My problem is I don?t think he sings as well as the other eight contestants at this point in the show.?

And therein lies the paradox that characterized Han?s stint on ?Idol.? He wasn?t quite compelling enough of an entertainer to win in the Taylor Hicks style, and he wasn?t a good enough pure vocalist to take the title that way. Whatever he did was going to win him some support ? he definitely has a future in entertainment somewhere ? but not enough to win a competition like this one.

Even on his best night, he legitimately had one of the weakest performances because everyone else was at their best as well. Since the judges did not use their save to keep him around, Han finishes in ninth place and will have to pack his things just after he moved into the ?Idol? mansion. It will definitely be a less funny place without him around.

The more shocking news was that Skylar Laine was in the bottom three, along with Hollie Cavanagh, who deserved that fate. That means Laine will likely get the fawning from the judges that?s been reserved for Elise Testone?as they try to keep the star women on the show without having to use their save so early. Maybe it was divine payback for picking Miranda Lambert as her idol, considering Lambert's husband, Blake Shelton, works for "The Voice."

Of course, there are other female stars that the judges seem less eager to have hang around. Guest performer Nicki Minaj, for example. She asked host Ryan Seacrest if she could come back and be a guest judge, and while their mouths said ?any time? the body language and facial expressions said ?no shot.? Especially if Jennifer Lopez has a say. She did not look happy at the thought of a challenge. Simon Cowell has more of a chance at being invited to judge again than Minaj does.

Hitting the other end of the excitability meter was the Eric Benet cameo. He appeared briefly onstage to tell DeAndre Brackensick how much he appreciated the young man's cover of his tune "Sometimes I Cry" on Wednesday, and the ?Idol? hopeful reacted as if ?he?d won the lottery. Mariah Carey did not do the same for Joshua Ledet, but she did tweet that she liked his performance of "Without You." Stunningly, she did not mention having worked with Randy Jackson. Maybe that feedback loop works only one way?

Brackensick avoided the bottom three this past week, but he can?t rest easy. Given the unpredictability of the voting so far, the only sure thing is that with Han out, there will be less irreverence in the show next week.

LONDON - Britain pledged $800,000 in support of Syrian opposition groups Thursday, three days ahead of a 70-nation summit that will seek to unify those against the regime of President Bashar Assad.

In a statement on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website, William Hague, Britain?s foreign secretary, said the ?non-lethal? assistance would help the groups ?develop themselves as a credible alternative to Assad and his regime."

The United States is still deciding what sort of support to provide, but is expected to make a similar pledge at the Friends of Syria conference in Istanbul, Turkey on Sunday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will use the summit to pressure the country's divided opposition to unite. Without that step, there is little chance Assad's opponents can oust him without a military intervention the West clearly does not want.

Fewer than half of the 22 Arab League heads of state are attending the summit, which is perhaps an indication of Sunni and Shiite tension in the region since the beginning of the Arab Spring.

President Barack Obama discussed providing medical supplies and communications support to the Syrian opposition with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan this week.

The United States may back further "non-lethal" aid for the opposition at the Istanbul meeting. But as is the case in Britain, there was no talk of arming the rebel military forces such as the Free Syria Army.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of State told msnbc.com there had been no change to its current position of exploring options.

"The United States has been trying to find a responsible way to help, using sanctions and ?moral support,'" said Joe Holliday, a security expert at the Institute for the Study of War.

"But it has been a balance between restraint and achieving the outcome it wants, getting Assad to go," he said.

Britain has already given $715,000 worth of non-military practical support, including communications assistance and training and advice to Syrian human rights defenders.

Assad faces mounting pressure from the West, from fellow Arab nations and even from staunch ally Russia. The United Nations says over 9,000 people have died since the Syrian uprising began last year.

A report in the New York Times said refugees fleeing Syria have described an alarming rise in sectarian conflict in the country, with Sunni Muslims claiming to have been shot at by neighbors who are members President Assad?s minority Alawite sect.

Umm Nasser, 34, a pregnant woman sheltering with female residents and their dozen children in a farm building over the border in Lebanon, told the newspaper that about 15 members of her family in the village of Joussi came under fire from the nearby Alawite village of Hasbeeh two weeks ago as they tried to leave their house.

Congregants wear hoodies, remember Trayvon Martin

EATONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Wearing hooded sweatshirts similar to the one that Trayvon Martin wore on the night he was killed, many preachers and worshippers echoed calls for justice Sunday in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in Florida last month.

The one-month anniversary of Martin's death is Monday. He was shot while wearing a "hoodie" as he walked home on a rainy night in a gated community. The neighborhood watch volunteer who shot him, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, is the son of a white father and Hispanic mother, and the demands to charge him in Martin's slaying have grown ever louder. He had called police to report the hooded figure as suspicious; the 17-year-old Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea, talking to his girlfriend on his cellphone.

In African-American and other religious centers from Florida to Atlanta, New York and Chicago, messages from pulpits couldn't help but touch on a seemingly avoidable tragedy that continues to be rife with more questions than answers. But while the call continued for the arrest of Zimmerman, there were also pleas to use the incident to spark a larger movement.

"How do we turn pain into power?" the Rev. Jesse Jackson asked a standing-room only congregation of hundreds while preaching at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville, Fla., about 20 miles from the site of the Sanford shooting. "How do we go from a moment to a movement that curries favor?"

Jackson preached a sermon entitled "The Substance of Things Hoped For." He called for Martin's "martyr" death to be used as an opportunity to revive the Civil Rights Commission and draw attention to long-standing issues. Very young children and teens sat in the choir behind him.

"The blood of the innocent has power," Jackson said to shouts of "Amen" and loud clapping.

Jackson invoked the names of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old boy bludgeoned and shot to death in Mississippi in 1955 for supposedly whistling at a white woman, and slain civil rights figures Medgar Evans and Martin Luther King, Jr.

"There's power in the blood of Emmett Till! There's power in in the blood of Medgar Evers! There's power in the blood of Dr. King!" declared the 70-year-old Jackson, who marched with King.

Jackson made a direct plea to change the "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law that many believe authorities in Florida used to avoid arresting him.

Amid the outcry over the lack of charges against Zimmerman, the Sanford police chief and state's attorney in the case have both stepped aside. The U.S. Justice Department has opened a civil rights probe into the shooting, and a grand jury is scheduled to meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case.

Zimmerman's attorney has said he believes the case falls under Florida's stand-your-ground law, which dictates that a person has the right to stand his or her ground and "meet force with force" if attacked. Attorney Craig Sonner has said Zimmerman is not a racist.

After Jackson's sermon, congregants said the civil rights activist's message resonated.

"This kind of activism never stopped in the church, that's what they do for us in the black community," said 34-year-old Nacia Bradley of Orlando. "That's what they're here to do."

Black churches have long served as catalysts for change and were instrumental during the civil rights era.

"The activism (in the church) is bigger and better than ever," said Kenneth Byers, 47, of Orlando. "Everything Rev. Jackson said was right on time."

At Chicago's St. Sabina Catholic Church, a predominantly black congregation, the Rev. Michael Pfleger wore the hood of his robe over his head while celebrating Mass. Pfleger, who is white, has long spoken out against violence.

During Mass, one congregant held a sign reading, "We are all Trayvon Martin."

In New York City, Middle Collegiate Church pastor Jacqueline Lewis said the church must assume both a spiritual and political role to end "the epidemic" of racism. She encouraged her congregants to send packages of Skittles to Sanford police, sign an online petition and attend an April conference on building multiracial congregations.

It's that sense of activism that resonated with Michael Ambrosini, who left the service wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. He said he attends the church in part because "such violence dictates strong political action, and this church takes action."

In the nation's capital, the pastors of Reid Temple AME in Glenn Dale, Md. and Metropolitan AME in downtown Washington, both wore hoodies.

Reid Temple's pastor, the Rev. Lee P. Washington, put the hoodie on his head and held up a box of Skittles and a can of iced tea before his sermon, "Trusting God When You Don't Understand," in which he discussed the Martin case. Metropolitan AME is just blocks away from the White House, and President Barack Obama worshipped there with his family in January, 2011.

At Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Jr. and his father once preached, dozens of people wore hoodies in Trayvon Martin's memory, including the Rev. Raphael Warnock.

"They said his name was Trayvon Martin. But he looked like Emmett Till," said Warnock, referring to the boy whose lynching more than a half-century ago raised awareness of the brutal realities of Jim Crow laws. "At least with Emmett Till someone was arrested. And that was in 1955."

The men charged with killing Till were acquitted by an all-white Mississippi jury, though they later confessed to the crime in a Look magazine article.

Ingrid Lester, 64, showed up for services wearing a hooded sweatshirt with a Skittles wrapper pinned to it. She said the Martin case reminded her of the struggle to end segregation in the 1960s, when she was a teenager. And she said the church had a crucial role to play now, just as it did then.

"We need a voice, and the church is our voice," she said.

At First Iconium Baptist, another predominantly black church in Atlanta, the Rev. Timothy McDonald told congregants at the early Sunday service, "We will not rest until Mr. Zimmerman who killed young Trayvon Martin is arrested. This could have been any one of our children."

The explosion in mobile communications in the developing world has created social and economic changes that have exceeded all expectations and predictions ? even those made as recently as five years ago. There are still countries lagging behind, but now is the time to move on to the next stage ? and that means broadband. Already the developed world is showing an enormous appetite for mobile broadband, so the demand is most certainly there.

The rapid development of low cost Smartphone, projected to approach $50 soon, and tablets, now already under $200, means that many people in the world who are not PC literate or have the ability to buy a PC ? will be able to experience the broadband Internet for the first time. Thus in the same way that the majority of people in the world made their first phone calls with a wireless phone; the majority of people in the world will have the first rich media Internet experience via wireless communications.

Broadband is the facilitator for a range of services that are of great value to governments, businesses and people in rural and regional areas as well as in the cities. However a holistic government policy is needed to achieve the associated social and economic benefits ? a policy that takes into account the ICT infrastructure requirements of the various sectors, the most appropriate use of mobile spectrum for both mobile broadband and the fixed-wireless network, and how this fits into the overall national broadband plan ? particularly in relation to the development of fibre optic networks for the underlying core.

Once positive and comprehensive trans-sector (national purpose) policies and the costly underlying infrastructure are in place, the business model for private investment is fairly straightforward. The demand for broadband is clear. People are prepared to pay for it if the price is affordable. Broadband facilitates social and economic developments in healthcare, education, media, e-commerce, m-banking, public safety communications. etc. Businesses and governments will invest in e-services if the infrastructure is in place ? but utilities-based infrastructure may be required in order for the underlying infrastructure to be put in place.

For that reason comprehensive government policies are required to build on the economic development and innovation that has been generated by the mobile explosion ? policies that will place mobile broadband development within the context of the emerging digital economy. Based on a trans-sector vision, rather than on silo-based policies, spectrum regulations can be developed that will allow society to reap the social and economic benefits of these new technologies. Policy makers should provide for abundant spectrum allocations of the right prime spectrum in order to create the abundant broadband wireless capacity needed to meet the promise of the mobile explosion.

We know that each new generation of mobile innovations doubles the capacity needed for these new applications and services. Moreover these innovations are coming at a much faster rate than innovations in network technology so demand is outstripping supply.?? In fact in developed markets, demand for mobile broadband is growing at 100% per year or greater while cost effective supply technology is continues to grow at only 40% per year.? Spectrum allocation and management are therefore critical, and unless this broader picture is taken into account countries will not be able to develop the right policies and regulations to take advantage of these opportunities.

What has also become clear is that, led by Apple, these new technologies have become intuitive to users. No training is needed and people do not have to be computer-literate to participate in these new developments.

Another important element is affordability. We have seen that mobile operators in developing economies are able to offer voice and low speed data service at very competitive prices. Today facilities are provided to make it possible for almost every person on earth to use mobile. Cheap and even free SIM cards are available; communities offer free or low-cost communal service; money transfers allow people to use mobile services paid for by family, friends, social institutions, and so on.

The rapid developments of rich media wireless applications have caught governments and regulations off-guard. It often takes 3-5 years to develop new policies, while new technologies are now developed every couple of years, and new applications and services are often developed within days.

So, unless governments start developing forward-looking policies they will forever be chasing their own tails.

The term does not pertain to the forms ask any questions (search as taxable interest, Wages, salary, and tips, etc). American Idol Results: Who Got the Chop?

American Idol pared its field down to nine singers this week.

Following their performances Wednesday night, DeAndre Brackensick and Heejun Han seemed destined for the bottom three on tonight's results show.

Did they land there? And who else ended up on the block?

The dreaded bottom three did indeed come down to the aforementioned two gentlemen, as many predicted, along with Erika Van Pelt, with the judges indicating right off the bat that they would not be saving any of the above. Rough!

When the results were read, the fewest number of votes went to...

Erika Van Pelt! Yes, America actually preferred DeAndre Brackensick and Heejun Han. The viewers of this show really don't like female singers, huh?

She had been a staple in the bottom three, but after a total makeover and a strong performance this week, many felt she would be in the clear.

Erika just didn't connect with enough voters to stay on Idol, though, leaving DeAndre and Heejun to fight another week ... possibly the last for one of them.

Are Ignition Interlock Devices Legal? | Criminal Law News Now

Ignition interlock devices have been getting a lot of attention lately. A number of new ignition interlock laws went into effect on the first of the year, and states like Virginia are considering strengthening their existing provisions.

The popular devices are used to punish DUI offenders, and are wired to a vehicle's ignition. Drivers can't start the car without first providing a breath sample. They are then periodically retested so as to confirm that they remain sober.

The whole process seems sort of intrusive, so you may be wondering why ignition interlock devices are legal.

For one, driving is a privilege. You have no constitutional -- state or federal -- right to operate a motor vehicle. The government can therefore restrict driving privileges so as to ensure public safety. Ignition interlock laws apply only to those who have been cited for driving under the influence and endangering the public.

This brings us to the second reason for why ignition interlock devices are legal. They're part of a scheme of criminal punishment. Individuals convicted of crimes are subject to reasonable restrictions as imposed by the court. In the grand scheme of things, a device may be more reasonable (and preferred) than a stay in jail.

If you still don't like the idea of ignition interlock devices, be aware that they aren't going away anytime soon. All 50 states currently have an ignition interlock law on the books, and 14 of them make the devices mandatory. In those states, an ignition interlock device must be installed after a driver's first DUI offense.
